Programs for Adults

Nurturing Parenting

The nurturing parenting program is a family centered trauma informed initiative designed to build nurturing parenting skills as an alternative to abusive and neglecting parenting. It focuses on replacing negative practices with positive ones. The long term goals are to prevent recidivism in families receiving social services, and reduce the rate of juvenile delinquency. This program also focuses on educating parents on the importance of taking a clear stance on tobacco and alcohol, and other skills like managing emotions to prevent teen drug and tobacco use. Additionally, we raise awareness about the opioid pandemic and teach parents safe medication disposal methods.

SYNAR Program: Reduce Youth Access to Tobacco

In collaboration with Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN), The Youth Connection (TYC), Strategies to Overcome Obstacles and Reduce Recidivism (SOOAR), and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the ACT Drug Free Community Coalition conducts tobacco retailer education and youth compliance checks throughout Wayne County.

LAHC is one of the three Designated Youth Tobacco Use Representatives (DYTUR) for Region 7. Together, they have been able to reduce national Retailer Violation Rate (RVR) from 29.7% (2015) to 7.9% (2019).

Safe Medication Disposal Program

The Safe Medicine Disposal Program is a partnership between local agencies, pharmacies, and law enforcement offices to safely dispose unwanted medications, prevent overdoses, and protect the environment.

The ACT Drug Free Community Coalition distributes Deterra Drug Deactivation Systems, which are disposal pouches that provide an easy way to deactivate and dispose of unused, expired or unneeded medications. We provide bilingual demonstrations and presentations on how to safely dispose of these medications in the home.
