Job Position: Chef Instructor: Culinary Nutrition

Full-Time: $30,000 to $33,000 + Benefits 

Promoting healthy lifestyles and educating youth and families about health issues; primarily nutrition, cooking and general wellness. The culinary chef instructor position serves to empower children and families using evidence-based strategies to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities. Specific strategies include providing evidence-based education pertaining to kitchen basics, food safety and recipe execution. Using existing teaching materials and curricula, the instructor is responsible for shopping, planning, and implementing programming, including cooking demonstrations, light physical activity instruction, in educational and community settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  •  Utilize best practices in nutrition education, culinary education, and community support
  • Responsibilities include facilitating nutrition & cooking lessons to students and adults (in-person and/or virtually)
  • Prepare & review shopping lists, recipes and coordinate grocery purchasing
  • Develop regular and effective communications and working relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders within the community
  • Collaborate with LAHC team members in facilitating community health programs
  • Coordinate and participate in outreach activities on as needed basis, e.g., outreach fairs, resource tables and presentations to community groups and agencies
  • Assist in designing promotional materials: flyers, media posts and short video clips/commercials
  • Prepare and develop online educational content, includes food demonstrations, food safety and instruction on kitchen basics
  • Host live interactive cooking demonstrations via zoom and Facebook
  • Facilitate group cooking demonstrations with an emphasis on nutrition and food preparation techniques
  • Prepare food items according to designated recipes and quality standards; maintain cleanliness and comply with food sanitation guidelines
  • Attend community coalition and action team meetings representing LAHC Healthy Living

Desirable candidates will be confident public-speakers; organized and detail-oriented; reliable and responsible; and highly motivated. Must be comfortable with using computers and videoconferencing. Cultural competency is a must; includes comfort in engaging with diverse audiences.

Education and Training Requirements:

Relevant experience and/or education: Culinary certification(s), Culinary Arts Degree and/or Associates Degree with culinary/hospitality focus minimum requirement, Bachelor’s preferable

  • 2-4 years’ experience as an instructor and/or field experience working with youth & families
  • ServSafe Certified a plus (required training upon hire)
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver license: main travel within Wayne County
  • Experience in outreach education; preferably with income eligible population
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • A passion for healthy cooking, nutrition education and wellness promotion
