Nutrition Specialist

Job Position: Nutrition Specialist
Part-Time: 30 hours per week

Promoting healthy lifestyles and educating youth and families about health issues, primarily nutrition and wellness. The Health Educator position serves to empower children and families using evidence-based strategies to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities. Specific strategies include providing evidence-based education pertaining to kitchen basics, food safety and recipe execution. Using existing approved teaching materials and curricula, the health educator is responsible for shopping, planning and implementing programming, including cooking demonstrations, physical activity instruction, in educational and community settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitation of health education workshops; includes both children and adults
  • Assist Program Manager in preparing lesson plans that conform to program guidelines, are age appropriate, and based on the needs of the participants
  • Lead group cooking demonstrations with an emphasis on nutrition and food preparation techniques
  • Prepare food items according to designated recipes and quality standards
  • Maintain cleanliness and comply with food sanitation standards at all times
  • Ensure knowledge of menu and all food products
  • Budget and shop for recipe ingredients
  • Practice correct food handling and food storage procedures according to federal, state, local and company regulations
  • Administer program assessment tools to evaluate participants’ needs and progress
  • Lead group fitness activities and/or assist in beginner physical activity class instruction
  • Daily travel to multiple sites to provide services to students, teachers and parents; all program sites serviced are located in Wayne County

Education and Training Requirements: 

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public health education or a closely related degree area such as nutrition, exercise and sports science/kinesiology and nursing
  • Personal Training Certification highly desirable and/or group fitness experience; can include coaching
  • Prior group facilitation experience and/or classroom training experience
  • Approximately 1+ year of related professional experience; preferably with subject matter expertise in nutrition, fitness and overall health and wellness
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. An outgoing, high energy personality is advantageous
  • Bilingual is highly desirable, cultural competency is a must
  • Solid organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deliverables and expectations
  • ServSafe Certified Preferred
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver license
