Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

Promotes a drug-free community by educating youth and families on health issues, primarily Nutrition and wellness in addition to tobacco and substance abuse prevention. Using existing approved teaching materials and curricula, the health educator is responsible for planning and implementing programming in educational settings. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and break the social stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse.

The Nutrition Health Educator position serves empower low-income families using evidence-based strategies to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities. Specific strategies include direct education in various settings, community-based projects to address policy, system or environmental changes and public health approaches to help children, families and adults improve dietary quality and food resource management skills and increase physical activity.
